Family fun

For a little while last week, life seemed a bit more normal in Atlas Township as families gathered at Goodrich Middle School for the PTO-sponsored “Summer Road Trip” event. The weather cooperated with sunshine and warm temperatures, and the crowd enjoyed the chance to socialize. The COVID-19 pandemic has limited the opportunities for such gatherings in the past year, so it was a welcome change in these strange and unprecedented times. Among the families that stopped by to enjoy the food trucks and games were Dalton Prime, Alyssa Candy and Harley Prime. Youngsters Jacob Efthemiou, Lila Schluentz and Brian Schluentz also had a blast as they burned off some energy tackling an inflatable palm tree. The kids received goodie bags compliments of local businesses and parents who provided some summer essentials such as Frisbees, yoyos, Play-Doh, tooth brushes, beach balls, coupons for ice cream and more. The food truck vendors – Weezie’s Funnel Cakes, Kona Ice, B-Dogs Specialty Hot Dog Cart and Holy Smokes BBQ – donated a portion of their proceeds to the PTO. The PTO helps teachers buy classroom supplies, and provides special programs such as Science Alive. “This is the first (event) we’ve been able to do where people could get out and mingle,” said PTO President Sandy Cooper. “We wanted to do a fun family event. It was great to see everybody out again.”
