Fat Guy has his crystal ball out and the Preakness winner is …

The 140th running of the Preakness Stakes is Saturday. The Preakness is the second jewel of the Triple Crown. The horse who won the Kentucky Derby, American Pharaoh, will be looking for that second win. The pursuit of the Triple Crown is the goal of every horse that wins the Kentucky Derby. American Pharaoh is a horse that can win the Preakness.

I think he is a very special horse with tremendous talent.

He will face stiff competition in Firing Line, who is currently 5-1, and his stablemate, Dortmund, who is currently 11-2. American Pharaoh is currently at 9-4 which makes him the favorite.

Carpe Diem and Materiality are both around 14-1 currently. I also think Stanford will run in this race after backing out of the Kentucky Derby as a late scratch.

I picked American Pharaoh to win the Derby and I am riding him as my selection in the Preakness. He is the best horse in the field and I think he will show the horse racing fans that he is on Saturday.

Do I think he will win the Triple Crown? I will say, maybe.

There have been numerous horses who have won the first two legs but could not win the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown.

I say get to the betting windows and bet American Pharaoh and count your dough! The Fat Guy has spoken! The crystal ball looks crystal clear! Those of you who like Carpe Diem, you know who you are, save your money this time, will ya?!

Building on the intrigue

I have not spent much time looking at the NBA playoffs and the first round. Why? It’s because they always go to script 99 percent of the time.

The second round has a couple of intriguing match ups. The Cleveland and Chicago series has been Buzzer- Beater Central, man. How about game three where Derrick Rose banks a miracle shot and the Bulls win? Cleveland’s “King” James hits the buzzer beater and the Cavs take game four and we now have a 2-2 series.

This has been a great series and who knows who will win it, to be honest. The L.A. Clippers are destroying the Houston Rockets and will win their series.

Washington is giving the Atlanta Hawks a run for their money currently leading 2-1 in the series. I feel as though these two teams are about as even as you can get talent-wise.

I like the Hawks to prevail in seven games.

The Golden State Warriors are down 2-1 with a critical game four lined up in Memphis. The Warriors were the best team all season long in the NBA and they could get knocked out by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Memphis matches up very well and plays top-notch defense. Will the Warriors depart early from these playoffs? Stay tuned.

Gut instinct says he goes

The Red Wings have set a soft deadline for Mike Babcock to pursue other coaching options. Mr. Babcock, I believe anyway, will listen to other teams’ offers and decide what’s best for him and his family.

I really hope he returns to the Red Wings but my gut hunch is he will not. Something tells me Buffalo will be his landing spot.

The next Red Wings coach could be Jeff Blashill, the coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins.

He has been the coach of many of the current Red Wings young hockey players. He has coached at Grand Rapids since the 2012 season and was Red Wings assistant during the 2011- 2012 season. Stay tuned, again.

Key cog in the machine

The Detroit Tigers need to get a healthy Justin Verlander back into the pitching rotation.

The Tigers cannot afford to slip behind the Kansas City Royals here in middle May. He, to me, is the key to whether or not the Tigers make the MLB Playoffs. We will look into the Tigers more next week. thefatguy@mihomepaper.com
