Fat Guy lock: Villanova

Fat Guy Corner

The clocks were moved forward over the weekend and basketball has moved forward to the NCAA Tournament, also known as March Madness.

It’s the greatest three weeks of sports, in my opinion, where we have the underdogs of smaller schools trying to knock off the college giants of basketball. When the tournament starts, who will suffer the first buzzer beater? Which team suffers the first major upset of the tournament on Thursday or Friday? It’s going to happen, as history shows us it always does.

Let’s start bouncing the orange pumpkins, ripping the nets, watching great comebacks, and filling out brackets! Who will cut down the nets in the very end? Your guess is as good as mine. Let’s break down the brackets and some Fat Guy predictions.

South region has tough sledding

The South region has Virginia as the No. 1 seed and No. 1 overall seed in the tournament. Virginia will have to earn its trip to the Final Four. Make sure you look at these teams as No. 2 is Cincinnati, No. 3 seed Tennessee, No. 4 seed Arizona and No. 5 Kentucky. Wow, I say tough sledding in this bracket! The Kentucky and Arizona teams are peaking at the right time and playing super basketball. The Tennessee team is also real dangerous. Let’s also tip your fork to the tough defense Cincinnati plays, much like Virginia. I think this is the year for Virginia to end its NCAA choking ways and make the Final Four, but it won’t be easy. My upset is Loyola over the Miami Hurricanes. I love Nevada to beat Texas and Kansas State over Creighton.

Nova all the way!

The East region’s No. 1 seed is the Villanova Wildcats. The Wildcats are my choice to win the entire tournament, actually. I love the balance of scoring and how they play defense, too! The Purdue and Cal State Fullerton game, along with Arkansas and Butler, will be played at Little Caesars Arena. The question is, can Purdue play the basketball in March that they played earlier in the season? If they do they can advance to play Villanova. I like the Virginia Tech team over Alabama in the eight/nine game. The three-seed Texas Tech better be ready for Stephen F. Austin, a 14-seed. I like Marshall, the 13-seed to upset the four-seeded Wichita State Shockers. The Butler team is under-seeded as a 10-seed and they will defeat the seven-seed Arkansas.

Sparty Party in Detroit

The Midwest region will feature Kansas as the No. 1-seed. The biggest joke is Michigan State as a No. 3! Are you freaking kidding me! The Spartans are a two-seed, worst case, and I feel a one-seed is really what they should be. Oh well.

The Spartans are at Little Caesars Arena on Friday night at 7:10 p.m. against Bucknell. The other game at Little Caesars Arena will be TCU and Syracuse or ASU, who have a play-in game on Wednesday night. I really think the Spartans and Kansas will play for a Final Four spot here in this bracket. I am picking Michigan State to go to the Final Four because they have so much talent. I do say, though, never, ever count out the Duke Blue Devils, who are always dangerous in March.

I like NC State in the eight/nine game over Seton Hall. The Rhode Island and Oklahoma game is intriguing. Oklahoma should not be in tournament, however, and I hope Rhode Island disposes of them in a large way. Let’s Sparty and hide the couches!

Weakest link in the West

The West region has the weakest and most vulnerable No. 1-seed in Xavier. I also believe it’s the weakest of the four brackets. The two-seed, North Carolina, is always a tough out and they are the defending champions. The seven-seed, Texas A&M, has the talent to make a run, too. The four-seed, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, are the experts’ sexy pick out of this bracket and are playing tremendous hoop.

The Michigan Wolverines as a three-seed are also a sexy pick for the Final Four. The Wolverines come in on a nine-game winning streak. I hope Michigan does not look past the Montana basketball team and suffer a first-round upset. Michigan has been off almost a full two weeks, as have the other Big Ten teams. If Michigan moves on, Houston or San Diego State will be tough outs. I like Mizzou over FSU in the eight/nine game. Ohio State better be ready for the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State. Go Blue and let’s get this tourney started. thefatguy@mihomepaper.com
