Fat Guy’s Corner

Rock solid

The Detroit Red Wings make the Fat Guy’s prediction of winning in seven games a rock solid selection. Yes, the men in the Winged Wheels went into Anaheim and pulled out the game seven victory, 3-2. What an accomplishment by this very young hockey club. Nobody really knew what to expect in this series against the Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks were the numbertwo seed and heavily favored over the number-seven seeded Red Wings.

The Red Wings were solid in overtime games, that’s for sure. I can’t say enough about goaltender Jimmy Howard and his play in this series. He kept Detroit in so many games with brilliant save after save. Let’s be honest, the defense at the blue line has been sporadic and sometimes just downright scary. The defensemen cough up the puck so many times at critical situations of tight, close hockey games. This is definitely one of the worst defenses at the blue line in the last two decades for Detroit.

Pavel Datsyuk played awesome hockey all series long. How about how much ice time Pavel logs night in and night out? Hank Zetterberg, the man with the “C” on his chest, stepped up huge in games six and seven. He was a big reason why the Red Wings are now moving on to round two of the NHL Playoffs. How cool is it that the opponent is none other than Original Six member the Chicago Blackhawks? All of us Red Wings fans need to appreciate this series, as Detroit is headed to the Eastern Conference and will not face the boys from Chicago too much anymore. I feel as though that is the one negative of Detroit moving to the Eastern Conference. None of us will miss those 10:30 p.m. playoff games on the West coast, will we?

Can the Red Wings win this series against the number-one seeded Chicago Blackhawks? Detroit could win this series if it limits mistakes on the blue line. The defensemen need to be solid or it could get ugly for the Red Wings. The forwards and centers are pretty evenly matched, especially the number one and two lines. Jimmy Howard could steal a series with outstanding play in the pipes. I would love to be a homer and pick the Red Wings in this match up. My round two selection says take the Chicago Blackhawks in six games. I really hope I am wrong, Red Wings fans!

Second leg

The running of the Preakness is this Saturday. Can Orb win the second leg of horse racing’s Triple

Crown? The horse racing industry could sure use a good story and a horse who has a shot at the Triple Crown. The Preakness field at Pimlico should have between nine to 12 horses in it. The horse I liked to win, Normandy Invasion, has pulled out of the race. Orb looked pretty strong in the Kentucky Derby and he should fare well here in this race. My Preakness winner will be Orb again and he will then need to win the Belmont Stakes to be a Triple Crown winner. I also like the horse Goldencents to improve off his terrible Kentucky Derby performance.

Tail spin

How about the ex-receiver from the Detroit Lions, Titus Young? Have you been following this knucklehead’s life lately? Titus Young has totally lost his mind. He has been arrested three times in about two weeks. He actually was arrested twice in one day! I said, twice, in one day! The Lions, as an organization, made the right move releasing him after all his antics on and off the field as a Lion. He is a total screwball. When Detroit drafted him he had character issues. NFL teams need to quit drafting these players with character issues because they all will resurface at one point or another during their career. The current players on the Lions roster have seemed to stay off the police blotter so far here in this off-season. Remember last year, it was arrest after arrest for the Lions football team? NFL training camp’s only two months away!

Sportscake: Tiger Woods wins the Players Championship over the weekend. I have to say he looked like the Tiger Woods of old. He looked confident on the golf course and that is good for the game of golf. Tiger drives ratings up on television! thefatguy@mihomepaper.com
