Fatal house fire under investigation


FLINT TWP. — Authorities are investigating the cause behind a house fire that left one woman dead in Flint Township on Sunday morning.

Shortly after 8 a.m., fire crews responded to a residential structure fire with entrapment in the 3200 block of Southgate Drive. Firefighters arrived on scene and found heavy smoke coming from the first-floor windows of the home.

Firefighters entered the house and extinguished the fire. During their search of the home, they discovered a victim who was deceased in her bedroom and a male occupant who was injured during the incident. The man, along with other members of the home, were taken to a local hospital.

Authorities have identified the deceased woman as 77-year-old Berita Jones of Flint Township.

The Flint Township Fire Department was assisted by the Flint Township Police Department and a Michigan State Police Fire Investigator. — B.G.
