FCP presents award-winning musical

FLINT
— Get ready for some academic fun with The Flint Community Players (FCP) and the opening of their 2010 holiday musical, the multiple Tony Award winning musical comedy, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

What happens when six somewhat neurotic, overachieving, compulsive, eccentric and competitive middle and high school students (who are actually played by six neurotic, overachieving, compulsive, eccentric and competitive adult actors), are mixed with one very retentive (but sparkling) moderator, one vice principal (who would rather be anywhere but here) and one “comfort counselor” (who’s doing community service as part of his “Parole”)? Only the makings of a remarkable and memorable musical.

Based on the book by Rachel Sheinkin, with music and lyrics by William Finn, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee features the vocal and acting talents of Jesse Glenn, Kristina Lakey, Patrick Munley, Elsa Harchick, Stephen Visser, Julie Caten, Patty Nelson, Sara Jarrett and Michael Poehner. Under the direction of Steven J. Mokofsky, with vocal and musical direction by Frank Pitts, FCP promises to deliver a wonderful evening of theatre right into attendees’ laps through plenty of audience involvement in the production.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee hits the stage at 8 p.m. Nov. 11-13 and 19-20 with afternoon matinees at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 14 and 21. All performances are held at the F. A. Bower Theatre, 1220 E. Kearsley St., in the Flint Cultural Center.
