Festival of Flags canceled

Chamber reminds community it is still here supporting local business

DAVISON — The Davison Festival of Flags, held annually in June, has been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak

The Davison Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted today (April 30), to postpone the festival, indefinitely.

LaDawn Hastings, director of the Davison Area Chamber of Commerce, said the board waited as long as possible, but admits they had to do what is mandated by the governor.

“As much as we want to have this festival, it’s not feasible,” said Hastings. “Lake Callis, where we hold the event, is closed for the whole month of May. We have no other alternative than to cancel.”

On a positive note, Hastings said the chamber is looking at maintaining correspondence with the carnival to see if there are openings later in the summer – possibly in August or September. She said the carnival is also currently struggling with many communities forced to cancel due to coronavirus.

Typically, she said there is never an option to change the date of the festival, but there might be an opportunity in August or September to reschedule the event if the carnival continues to have availability.

“We can’t say for certain,” said Hastings. “We don’t know if the lake is available. We don’t know about the lockdown and restrictions. If it’s feasible to have a celebration, and maybe we call it that, at the end of summer, with fireworks or something like that, we’ll keep looking into the possibilities. But we can’t make promises. We don’t want to give false expectations.”

The entire community, she said, is struggling, and not only is the chamber asking the community for support, but she adds the chamber is there to support the community and its businesses.

“We want the community to know we are here, and we support them,” said Hastings. “But our hands are tied. It’s a huge disappointment, we get that, but this is also very scary.

“We’re all trying to find our new normal.”

The Chamber of Commerce will continue to look at the festival’s future and will plan for next year, if nothing else develops. Any businesses in the community who need help from the Davison Area Chamber of Commerce can call 810-653- 6266.
