GRAND BLANC TWP. — A Grand Blanc Township family lost their home and belongings after a fire erupted in the garage and quickly spread Saturday night.
Firefighters were summoned to the old farmhouse at 6041 McCandlish Road around 8:35 p.m., and found that, within minutes, the flames had spread to a trailer, boat, two vehicles parked outside the garage and the home, fire department officials said.
The heat from the blaze caused several propane and other gas cylinders to explode.
In addition, the flames swept through hidden voids in the structure, created by multiple remodeling projects over the years, authorities said.
Firefighters faced further complications as the fire and weight of the water weakened the structure, causing portions of the roof, walls and second floor to collapse.
Crews battled the blaze for seven hours, with assistance from the City of Grand Blanc, Atlas Township, Mundy Township and Fenton Township fire departments.
There were no injuries to the family or firefighters.
The cause remains under investigation.
