Fire drill

Hopefully whoever was driving these vehicles was not seriously injured. But some good is coming from it. Double K & S Towing of Swartz Creek provided an unlimited number of these wrecked vehicles for firefighters to practice extrication, said Mike Burkley, assistant fire chief in a report to the Flint Township Board. Disassembling cars in a non-emergency setting helps firefighters better learn to use the Jaws of Life extrication equipment. The practice drills lasted about two weeks, Burkley said. Firefighters also recently underwent special safety training on working with hybrid (gas and electric fueled) vehicles, provided by Macomb Community College. Hybrids can pose some special dangers that firefighters need to know about, Burkley said. Also, the fire department still is accepting applications for 3 full-time firefighter openings through September 1. Applications are available on the township website or during business hours at the township clerk’s office or at fire station one. — Photo by Rhonda Sanders
