Practice makes perfect for township firefighters who keep their skills up to par with regular training. Last week, they worked on driving and water transfer skills in a parking lot at Genesee Valley Center mall. Water transfer involved one truck collecting water from a hydrant and transferring it by hose to the bigger pumper truck. At a real fire, this comes in handy for allowing the big truck to remain in place while other trucks fetch water from the nearest hydrant. A driving test course was created with orange cones to practice alley dock parking, serpentine forward and backward maneuvering, parallel parking and diminishing side clearance – without knocking over any cones. Next month’s drill will be extrication from a vehicle using the Jaws of Life.
