FLINT – Playing back-to-back games at the Dort Federal Event Center this past weekend didn’t help the Flint Firebirds earn their first win of the season, losing 6-3 to the Kitchener Rangers.
Saturday’s game actually started off on the right foot, as CJ Clarke gave Flint a 1-0 lead just 1:05 into the game. Connor Roberts then doubled the advantage with a goal just 1:02 into the second.
In a span of less than nine minutes, the Rangers tallied three goals to jump in front with Greg Meireles, Jonathan Yantsis and Nick McHugh all tallying. Near the midway point of the final frame, Eric Uba tied things back up for Flint. That was short-lived, though, due to Kitchener scoring less than a minute later.
Friday’s 5-3 loss to the North Bay Battalion was more of a back-and-forth battle until the end. North Bay got the only goal of the opening period, but Ty Dellandrea tied it up 42 seconds into the second period.
North Bay grabbed the lead back about six minutes later, which Hunter Holmes answered again draw even. North Bay then took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission with a late second period goal. Near the middle of the third, Eric Uba tied it up for Flint for the final time because the Battalion scored a pair of power-play goals late in the game.
Flint (0-9-0-0) goes to Saginaw on Saturday and hosts Barrie on Sunday.
