FLINT — The 2015-16 Ontario Hockey League schedule was released last Thursday, and as it turns out, the Flint Firebirds and Saginaw Spirit got their wish to open the season with a homeand home against one another.
The Firebirds’ first-ever regular season game will be on Thursday, September 24 at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw with face off scheduled for 7:11 p.m. The two teams will battle once more at Perani Arena in Flint that Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. face off. It is being promoted with a “Renew The Rivalry” campaign, referring to the rivalry between the two cities during the days of the Flint Generals and Saginaw Gears.
“We could not be more excited about our inaugural OHL schedule,” said team President Costa Papista in a press release. “We literally play 28 of our 34 home games on non-school nights. This allows us to truly accommodate families and our younger fans. By design, our schedule avoids the majority of Genesee County
high school football Friday night games.
“We are hopeful that the community will embrace Saturday night as hockey night in Flint and Genesee County.”
The Firebirds will have 18 Saturday night games at Perani Arena, with Flint fans getting to see every member of the 20-team OHL at least once during the season, including the defending Memorial Cup Champion Oshawa Generals, who come to Flint on Sunday, November 8 at 5 p.m.
Flint will get very familiar with its West Division opponents, facing the Spirit and Sarnia Sting eight times each, as well as six games apiece against the Windsor Spitfires and Soo Greyhounds. — B.P.
