FLINT TWP. — The fire department is purchasing 20 sets of turnout gear for its on-call fire fighters at a cost of $29,920, the low bid.
Two bids were submitted, one from Douglass Safety Systems of Sanford and the other from Fire Equipment Associates of Flushing.
The township board approved the bid from Douglass Safety Systems for $1,496 per set compared to $1,577.50 from Fire Equipment.
The purchase will be funded by the recently passed Fire Equipment Millage, said Assistant Fire Chief Mike Burkley.
The department currently has 24 on-call firefighters and three more in fire academy training. If more turnout gear sets are needed, the bid price is good, with a five percent increase, until the end of 2017, he said.
Fulltime firefighters already have gear that is only about three years old, Burkley said.
Township Trustee George Menoutes asked what would be done with the old gear.
Burkley said they will keep it to use as back up. But after ten years of use and exposure to ultraviolet rays, smoke and other chemicals, it is patched and deteriorating.
Burkley said he expects delivery of the near gear in about two months or sooner. The outer shell of the golden brown jackets will include a Flint Township label in three-inch lettering. The matching pants have leather reinforcement at the knees and cuffs.
