The NFL playoffs went six straight games of blowout football games over the weekend. The home teams were 6-0 and winning by large margins. I was thinking that this is the worst playoff football season I can remember in a long time. I also wondered when an underdog and road team will crash this playoff scene.
The answer to that question came late Sunday afternoon and late Sunday night. The Green Bay Packers took down America’s Team 34-31 in an instant classic football game. The Packers jumped out to a large lead only to see Dallas come back and tie it up. The teams then traded three field goals in the last two minutes. The three field goals were made from more than 50 yards. The last one and game winner was by Green Bay’s kicker, Mason Crosby. The play that Aaron Rodgers made was a sick throw completed along the sideline with three seconds left in the game. It was a pass only a couple of quarterbacks in the NFL can make and to be honest, Rodgers is the best at it. This was an awesome game to watch.
My problem is that I hate both Green Bay and Dallas! The Packers move on to take on Atlanta Sunday at 3:05 p.m. in Atlanta on FOX. The Atlanta Falcons wiped out the Seattle Seahawks to move on to the NFC Championship game, The boys in Vegas have installed the Falcons as four-point favorites to advance to the Super Bowl. I will give you my prediction but a reminder I went 1-3 last week in the division round. I also remind you that these two teams played earlier in Atlanta. The Falcons won the game 33-32. I think this one is a shootout and I like Atlanta to win again. The crystal cheeseball speaks and says: Dirty Birds 36 and Discount Double Checks 31.
The Sunday nightcap, which was moved from one o’clock to Sunday night because of a possible ice storm, was another wild and crazy game. What if I told you one team scored zero touchdowns and the other team two touchdowns and the team with zero touchdowns won? Yet, that’s how Pittsburgh defeated the Kansas City Chiefs by kicking six field goals to win 18-16. Another underdog and another road team! It’s funny how things turned out on Sunday.
The Pittsburgh Steelers will now play on Sunday night on CBS at 6:40 p.m. in New England. I know there is shock that the New England Patriots are in the AFC Championship Game. Yeah, right! The Patriots just make reservations every season and always play in the championship.
Tom Brady has tremendous success against the Pittsburgh team going 4-0 and tossing 15 touchdowns against zero interceptions. The play of Big Ben against the Patriots has also been solid with a 95.4 passer rating. The defense of the Steelers needs to be solid in this game if they are to win in Gillette Stadium. I would look for Pittsburgh to hand the ball off to Le’Veon Bell to keep the Tom Bradyled offense off the field. This football game should be a dandy between two NFL heavyweights. The winner is No Deflate Gate 30 and City of Steel 24.
The defection of the San Diego Chargers out of San Diego to Los Angeles makes me very sad. The late 70s until the mid-80s I loved the Chargers and Air Coryell created by Coach Don Coryell. Dan Fouts was the quarterback and the Chargers led the league in passing almost every season. They became the first team to consistently throw the ball more than running it in the NFL. Don Coryell used to use the one back in the backfield instead of two backs like other teams used. The San Diego Chargers were a ball to watch offensively and I loved it. I think they will struggle drawing fans in L.A. as L.A. fans are not what I call a passionate fan base. I guess my two Charger hats and two shirts are true collector’s items now! I am so sad right now. firstname.lastname@example.org
