GENESEE COUNTY – Registration got under way a month early for the 76th season of the Flint Junior Golf Association.

On-line registration began March 1 and will run through May 5, with season play beginning on June 22. Registration will be accepted by logging onto www.fjga.org and following the registration directions. Registration forms also will be available at King Par Golf and local participating golf courses.

New this year is an Early Registration Bonus. Any junior golfer who signs up in the month of March will receive a Kids Club Pass, which entitles them to one free bucket of range balls at King Par each week to practice all year-round.

In addition, the King Par and FJGA staff are working together to establish a FJGA Club House Area at the King Par facility, where junior golfers and parents can relax during practice or scheduled lessons.

“It allows them to practice their game throughout the whole year, instead of just the six weeks of the junior golf season,” said FJGA director Loyd Walter. “They might do lessons with Jack Seltzer, the new pro at King Par.”

The FJGA is one of the largest and oldest junior golf organizations in the country.

Since its inception in 1939, the program has provided an opportunity for young golfers to learn, play and enjoy a game that they can play for a lifetime. Flint Junior Golf is open to area youth ages 8-18 who live or go to school in Genesee County or is a member of the Flint Metro League school system. More than 750 junior golfers from the Greater Flint area participated last year.

FJGA is divided into three divisions: a 5-hole division (ages 8-11); a 9-hole division (up to 14 for boys and 15 for girls); and an 18-hole division (ages up to 18). The entry fee is the only fee paid all year and there are no additional weekly costs.

The fee includes a bag tag, a rulebook, seasonal instruction clinics, a chance to win medals during weekly play, and a chance to win trophies in the end of the season tournament. The entry fee also covers the weekly golf fees at area courses for the season.

Entry fee for the 5-hole division is $60, for the 9-hole division the fee is $75 and $90 for the 18-hole division. FJGA play begins on June 22 and ends with a tournament on July 27-28 for 5-hole and 9-hole divisions and Aug. 3-6 for the 18-hole division.

Twenty-two area courses will participate in the program this year, including Warwick Hills, which is hosting the Randy Wise-AJGA Buick Junior Open the week of Aug. 17-20.

Additional courses participating include the City of Flint municipal courses, Captains Club, River Forest, Beechwood Greens, Goodrich Golf Club, Briar Ridge, Clio, Vienna Greens, Flushing Valley, Davison Country Club, Copper Ridge, Genesee Valley Meadows, Jewel of Grand Blanc, Flint Golf Club, IMA Brookwood, Atlas Valley, Spring Meadows, Southmoor, Sugarbush and Flint Elks.

The Flint Junior Golf Academy will provide seven pre-season clinics beginning in late May, which are also included in the entry fee.
