Flint Township reaps benefits of FANG membership

FLINT TWP. — Lt. Mitch Krugielki, unit commander of the Flint Area Narcotics Groups (FANG), presented the township board with a check for $50,317.08 at its Monday night meeting.

He said it was the township’s share of proceeds under drug forfeiture laws from a drug bust in February 2009 resulting in seizure of some 1,200 pounds of marijuana and $1.8 million in cash and assets.

FANG’s multijurisdictional drug team investigates local drug and criminal activity and is made up of members of law enforcement agencies throughout Genesee County including the Flint Township Police Department.

Krugielki said it is the most successful team of its kind in the state. He shared with the board some statistics from drug seizures from Nov. 3 of last year through March 30 of this year which included confiscating nearly 154 grams of heroin, 900 pounds of marijuana, 450 grams of cocaine and 375 grams of crack cocaine. FANG also arrested 107 felons and seized 72 firearms including assault weapons, he said.

Police Chief George Sippert said FANG is a tremendous resource for the department and will pitch in and help when needed such as to hunt for a homicide suspect.

Supervisor Karyn Miller also expressed appreciation for FANG’s good work.
