FLINT — Flint Youth Theatre announces open auditions and technical interviews for Great Expectations.
Based on one of Charles Dickens’ best-loved novels, Great Expectations will be directed by FYT Associate Artistic Director Walter Hill and performed on the FYT stage July 22-Aug. 6. Auditions and technical interviews are open to all students in grades seven and above and will be held June 7 from 6:30- 9:30 p.m. with check-in beginning after 6 p.m.
All auditions and interviews will take place at FYT, 1220 E. Kearsley St. in the Flint Cultural Center, using FYT’s Kearsley Street Entrance.
Faithfully adapted from Dickens’ novel by Barbara Field, Great Expectations conveys all the energy and warmth of this richly human story. The play begins with Pip’s humble boyhood at the home of his long-suffering sister and her husband, the kind-hearted Joe Gargery.
The story then follows Pip through his encounter with the escaped convict, Magwitch; his experiences with the bizarre Miss Havisham and her haughty ward Estella; and on to his removal to London where, after his “expectations” are mysteriously made known, Pip aspires to become a gentleman. As a result of his adventures, Pip gives moving evidence that, in growing up, he has also come of age as a compassionate and altogether admirable human being.
Those auditioning are asked to wear a loose shirt, sweat pants, tennis shoes and have hair pulled back. No skirts, jeans or head coverings. FYT is committed to ethnically mixed companies.
Rehearsals for Great Expectations will begin June 13. Performances of Great Expectations will run for eight performances from July 22 through Aug. 6.
