Flotilla offers fun in the sun on Flint River

FLINT — Everyone is invited to sit back and relax on the first ever Flotilla down the Flint River. A flotilla is an event where individuals bring floating devices to enjoy a leisurely float down a river complete with an after party. The Flotilla will take place on Aug. 2 and is a fundraiser for the Flint River Corridor Alliance (FRCA).

FRCA Director Janet Van De Winkle said, “The Flotilla is a great way for community members to gain a new perspective on the Flint River. We have done several practice floats and it has been a lot of fun for everyone who has participated.”

The event will take place on Aug. 2 starting at 3 p.m. Participants will drop their cars off at Mott Park Golf Course on Sunset Drive just east of Ballenger Highway near McLaren Hospital. A shuttle will transport participants to launch from the Firehouse at 119 N. Grand Traverse St. in Flint.

The route along the river takes approximately two hours to complete. Once arriving back at the Mott Park Golf Course, participants are invited to stay for the AfterFest complete with entertainment. Food and beverages will also be available for purchase.

“We are working to change the perception of the Flint River. It is currently the primary water source for the city, so we want people to be able to see up close what a great resource it is for our community,” said Van De Winkle.

From inner tubes to rafts to kayaks, people should plan to bring a flotation device with them to the event. There will be a limited supply of inner tubes and other floating devices available for purchase the day of the event. Prizes will be awarded in various categories including best floating device, most fun and last place.

The cost to participate in the event is $10 per person, children under the age of 12 are free. Registration can be done in advance through the Flint River Watershed Coalition Office at 810-767-6490 or on-line at www.Flintriver.org. Onsite registration will also be available at the event starting at 1:30 p.m.

The FRCA was established in 2007, to increase the overall investment and health of the Flint River Corridor. The purpose of the Alliance is to improve access to the waterway through the restoration of existing resources and to create new opportunities for recreation along the river.
