Breast cancer can’t be prevented, but you can take steps to help detect it earlier. In addition to taking advantage of the free screenings offered at Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute, adult women of all ages are encouraged to perform breast self-exams at least once a month.
Approximately 40 percent of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump. Breast self-exams will help you become familiar with how your breasts look and feel so you can alert your physician if you identify changes.
Remember, eight out of 10 lumps found are not cancerous.
This year, more than 250,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. The good news is that when breast cancer is detected early, it can be treated more successfully, increasing the chances for survival. — G.G.
