GENESEE COUNTY — For eight years, Flint’s “Shakespeare in the Park” in Kearsley Park has drawn rave reviews and enthusiastic crowds. Again this year, the production is going beyond Kearsley Park to parks across the city and county.
Admission to all performances (except the opening night gala at Kearsley Park) is free. Please bring your own lawn chairs everywhere except Kearsley Park.
The Grand Opening Gala Fundraiser at Kearsley Park features strawberries and cream before the show and champagne by candlelight afterwards with the actors, all compliments of Fandangles.
Gala tickets are $25 and up.
This year’s production — “As You Like It” — opens at Kearsley Park with performances on June 8 and June 9 at 8 p.m. with the only matinee on June 10 at 2 p.m. The production then goes on the road with performances at For-Mar Nature Preserve on June 14 at 7 p.m., Linden County Park’s Clover Beach on June 14 at 7 p.m. and finally at Flushing County Park on June 16 at 7 p.m.
“As You Like It” follows its heroine Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle’s court, accompanied by her cousin Celia and Touchstone the court jester, to find safety and eventually love in the Forest of Arden.
The play features one of Shakespeare’s most famous and oft-quoted speeches, “All the world’s a stage”. The play remains a favorite among audiences and has been adapted for radio, film and musical theatre. The Kearsley Park Players production features many prominent area actors, including James Cech, Mary Paige Rieffel, Brian Haggard, Michael Kelly, D.J. Trela, Jason Garza, Harry Mitchell and others. The play is directed by Kay Kelly.
