The Flint Symphonic Wind Ensemble will hold a joint concert on Feb. 23 with the Carman-Ainsworth High School Symphonic Band.

FLINT TWP. — The Flint Symphonic Wind Ensemble (FSWE) and the Carman-Ainsworth High School Symphonic Band will hold a joint concert at 7 p.m. on Tuesday February 23 in the CAHS auditorium, 1300 N. Linden Rd. Flint.

This concert is free and open to the public. FSWE is celebrating its 50th Anniversary of offering music education and entertainment to the community.

The FSWE community band was founded in March 1966 as “The Flint Civic Wind Ensemble,” according to information provided on its website. It was organized by Donald C. Clough and sponsored by the Flint Community Music Association (the parent organization of the Flint Symphony Orchestra at that time). Its name changed to “Flint Symphonic Wind Ensemble” in 1984 and the band received official non-profit status in 1999.

The band’s mission is to provide musical access to both practice and performances for adult musicians and to provide music education and entertainment for the community.

The band is open to the public to join. However, members are required to be over 18 years old and be able to read music.

Rehearsals are held in the CAHS band room on Tuesday nights from 7:30-9:30 p.m., starting after Labor Day each year and running through the final concert in the Spring.

FSWE provides local adult musicians a place to practice their music with other adult musicians and to enhance their knowledge and appreciation of instrumental music.

Each year, FSWE offers six to ten concert performances to the Greater Flint Area public, providing an opportunity for the community to enjoy instrumental music by seasoned musicians and to increase music appreciation. Some of these performances are in high schools and/or middle schools, with student musicians joining the FSWE members in performing.

FSWE shares some of its musicians with the Flint Concert Band, the Genesee Wind Symphony, North Oakland Concert Band, South Oakland Concert Band, and the Lansing Concert Band. Some of these players also are members of the Genesee Valley Concert Band, Vassar City Band, and Holly Community Band, all of which perform in the summertime.
