FLINT — The Flint Youth Symphony Orchestra will put on a “Meet The Orchestra” concert Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. at The Whiting.
The ‘for youth, by youth’ concert will provide a lively introduction to all of the instruments in the orchestra and how they work together to produce beautiful music. The evening’s program will feature several popular pieces, including “The Planets” and the opening theme from Star Wars. Tickets for the concert are $6 for students and $12 for adults.
“The FYSO students are really a special group of talented musicians,” stated Davin Pierson Torre, Director of the FSPA and conductor of the FYSO. “Not only do the students work hard to perform well, but they are looking to make an impact on younger musicians and hopefully inspire the next generation of orchestra members.”
Flint Youth Symphony Orchestra is comprised of string, wind, bass, percussion, piano and harp players who come together from 25 zip codes across mid-Michigan.
All of the young musicians are also active in their respective school bands and orchestras in addition to the strong commitment they give to the FYSO. Each year, many rising seniors pursue opportunities in music education at the collegiate level, auditioning for highly respected programs throughout the country including University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Michigan State University and Oberlin Conservatory.
In addition to the evening performance, FYSO will perform three daytime concerts for area elementary school children. The performances provide an opportunity for young students to learn about various musical instruments with a hands-on instrument playground before the performance and with video screens showing the performers during the concert.
