AREAWIDE — The Genesee Area Conference will have a muchneeded new look come the fall.
As recent as 2017-18, the GAC had 15 member schools, but things quickly changed for the following school year. New Lothrop, Montrose, Byron, Mt. Morris, Otisville LakeVille and Durand all fled to the newly-formed Mid- Michigan Activities Conference and Genesee went to the North Central Thumb League.
Things got even more difficult this past fall with Goodrich, Corunna and Lake Fenton all merging into the Flint Metro League, leaving the GAC with few options.
However, the member schools explored their options and were able to add several schools for next school year.
The league already had Burton’s Atherton, Bendle and Bentley, as well as Flint Beecher and Flint Hamady. Those schools will now be joined by International Academy of Flint, Burton Madison Academy, Morrice, Flint New Standard Academy, Webberville and Burton Genesee Christian.
The new formation was confirmed by both Bendle athletic director Liane Steller and Bentley athletic director Scott Bednarski. Bednarski also added that there will be divisions within the GAC but they will be different for each sport.
The expansion brings some much-needed stability to the GAC, which was on its heels following all of the departures in the past few years.
