GENESEE COUNTY — This summer, kids and their families are invited to take a magical journey and fun-filled adventure with a famous mouse.
This journey won’t take them to the sunshine state but rather to their local Genesee District Library (GDL) for Book Mouse’s Big Time Summer Adventure, which begins June 8 (libraries that are closed on Fridays will begin June 9) and concludes on Aug. 4.
Kids entering grades K-through 6th can sign up at any of the 19 area GDL locations for an opportunity to race alongside the library’s mascot, Book Mouse, in an imaginary car on a quest to collect enough game points to unlock the treasures of the Purple Phantom. Game points are earned by reaching certain reading time levels, as well as attending free, fun library events like Baffling Bill’s Magic Show, Animal Encounters, Science Alive, and Creatures of the Night.
Visit www.thegdl.org or any GDL location for the complete listing of events.
“While the GDL will do its best to make this a fun summer for our young people, we also want to reinforce the importance of reading during the summer months as a way to stop summer reading loss,” said Carolyn Nash, Genesee District Library Executive Director.
Some research indicates summer reading loss is cumulative. Children will not “catch up” in the fall because the other children have already moved ahead with their skills. By the end of sixth grade, children who lose reading skills over the summer are two years behind their classmates.
All those who sign up for the adventure will receive a small prize. The key is to earn as many game points as possible, through reading and attending events, for a chance to win bigger prizes like gift cards, bowling birthday parties, tickets to see new pop sensation One Direction, Nickelodeon’s Big Time Rush, the Detroit Tigers or Ice Age: Continental Drift 3-D.
Teens & Adults Reading Promotion
Teens entering grades 7-12th, as well as adults can also win great prizes! The GDL’s “Summer Check In” promotion encourages patrons to check out materials, as well as attend family programming. A “Check In” coupon will be given each time a patron checks out library material and/or attends an event from June 11th through Aug. 4.
The coupons will enter them into special drawings for prizes like movie passes or a Kindle Touch. Patrons are limited to one coupon per visit.
The Genesee District Library (GDL) is an award-winning system serving Genesee
County, with the exception of the City of Flint (Flint Public Library coverage area). All library buildings (excluding Genesee Valley Center location) are owned by the local governmental agencies.
The GDL provides staffing, materials, administrative support, technology, and programming.
The GDL is funded by a .7481 county wide millage (excluding City of Flint). An additional 0.25 mills was approved on May 3, 2011. — G.G.
