FLINT — The Genesee District Library has named Marissa Boisclair as the new Children’s Librarian.

Boisclair has worked in libraries for 10 years, most recently as a Youth Services Library Assistant at Delta Township District Library and as a Library Assistant at Capital Area District Library.

The role of the children’s librarian is to provide literacy services for youth in Genesee County, including story times for children. “My story times will incorporate sign language, and I love to build programs around literacy, empathy, mindfulness, and problem-solving,” said Boisclair. “I hope to increase literacy rates by collaborating with the schools, caregivers, and children of our communities.”

According to Boisclair, libraries keep people connected socially, in person and virtually, and also help people sort truth from fiction. “I hope to reach members of the community who have yet to discover the library and share these wondrous worlds with them,” she said. “Libraries offer free programming and access to digital and physical materials for all their entertainment, lifelong learning, and hobby building needs.”

Boisclair sees the role of the library as one of support and navigation for the community, including small business owners, schools and students. “We are community hubs and we’re not going anywhere,” she said.

Most importantly, Boisclair hopes to provide safe and welcoming spaces and platforms for youth to express themselves.

Boisclair holds an Associate of Arts degree from Mott Community College, a Bachelor of Accounting from Northwood University, and a Master of Library Science from Wayne State University. — G.G.
