FLINT — The Genesee District Library (GDL) has named John Ekleberry as the new Technical Services Manager. Ekleberry started his career with GDL while in high school, and worked his way from entry level to management, serving as the librarian at the Linden branch for the past five years.
The Technical Services department is responsible for library acquisitions. All new items, both physical and digital, flow through Technical Services and into GDL’s 19 locations. “I hope to continue to provide excellent content for our patrons,” Ekleberry said, “and stay at the forefront of materials and services offered by libraries.”
According to Ekleberry, the biggest challenge facing libraries today is a shift toward digital lending over the last several years. “But rest assured,” he said, “brick-and-mortar libraries aren’t going anywhere. The current pandemic offers its own challenges for libraries but know that we’re still here to serve you.”
Equal access to information is just as important as ever in the digital age, says Ekleberry. “GDL’s vision statement, ‘To be a community destination for traditional and modern resources, which empower and enrich the communities we serve,’ sums up our role nicely,” he said.
“Having worked in many different positions and locations at GDL I have a unique perspective on the materials and services our patrons are looking for,” says Ekleberry. “If you’re looking for an item the library doesn’t currently carry, don’t hesitate to make a suggestion to your local librarian.”
Ekleberry holds a bachelor’s degree in communication from the University of Michigan-Flint, and a Master of Library Science from Clarion University. — G.G.
