FLINT — The Genesee District Library (GDL) has named Ryan Tackabury as the new Digital Services Librarian. Prior to this position Tackabury worked as a page, then a Library Assistant, for GDL.
Digital Services Librarian is a new position for Genesee District Library and fulfills a goal of the 2017-2019 Strategic Plan laid out by Library Director David Conklin. The purpose is to provide enhanced services and learning opportunities for patrons and staff.
“In my time working in the library, I have found a real joy in helping and teaching others,” Tackabury said. “I also have a love of learning new things, and a love of technology. I am excited to have the opportunity to combine these two passions.”
According to Tackabury, most people know that your local public library is where you can go to get books, but he wants to share other resources that will help people in their everyday life. “As the Digital Services Librarian, I can inform and teach people about these resources so that they can get the most out of them,” he said.
“Technology in 2018 is advancing at a fast, sometimes frightening rate – and it will only continue to advance faster,” Tackabury said. “It can be intimidating at times, especially to those who did not grow up with all of the technology that has worked its way into our lives.”
“I want people to know that technology can be useful and fun,” Tackabury said. “It’s a balancing act. I hope to help others embrace the fun aspects of technology, and to better manage those aspects that can be a little scary.”
Tackabury holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Michigan- Flint. He holds a Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Michigan-Flint and a Master’s in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from Wayne State University. — G.G.
