GENESEE COUNTY — The Genesee County Ambassadors, in conjunction with the Genesee County Jail, want to ensure that children of incarcerated parents receive Christmas cheer in the form of a nice new toy.
Collections are starting for the 2nd Annual All Children are Equal Holiday Toy Drive at the Genesee County Jail, hosted by the Genesee County Ambassadors, The Lenore Croudy Family Life Center and Motherly Intercession. Toys and donations will be accepted from now until Dec. 21.
Genesee County Ambassador Percy Glover said that children of incarcerated parents often face complex concerns and threats to their emotional, physical, educational and financial well-being. The toy drive, he said, helps to brighten the lives of those children and give them hope for the future.
“The lack of systemic support and affection for children who endure disconnection from the parent or parents who are away in jail are grossly intense,” he said. “We want to develop holiday gifting for our youth so that we address generational incarceration early (and) ensure that our children do not suffer from the implications of intergenerational parental incarceration.”
People who want to participate in the drive can bring new, unwrapped toys for children ages 1-12 to the following locations: Lenore Croudy Family Life Center, 1509 E. Court St., Flint, MI 48503. 10 a.m.—6 p.m. Monday thru Thursday; and the Genesee County Jail, 1002 Saginaw St., Flint MI 48502, 7 a.m.—7 p.m. Monday thru Friday.
Toys will be distributed to children on Dec. 23.
Monetary donations will be accepted by check, cash, or CashApp. Checks can be made to the Genesee County Ambassadors in care of Johnell Allen-Bey or by using the Cash App: $caleb0211.
