Genesee County hospitals partner with Flint Schools for annual “Shoes That Fit”

GENESEE COUNTY — The employees of Ascension Genesys, Hurley and McLaren came together for the nineteenth year to sponsor the Flint Community Schools “Shoes That Fit Connie’s Kidz” program.

Coordinated by Flint Community Schools and the three hospitals, school staff identifies students in need of shoes, and employees at the three hospitals purchase them. The 2019 “Shoes That Fit” campaign took place this year from Nov. 18 through Dec. 17.

“We appreciate the hospitals and their employees for supporting this project for nearly two decades, states Ernest Steward, Director of Parent/ Student Intervention, Safety and Title IX Coordinator. “Every year the students look forward to getting their new shoes and the hospitals are always willing to help fill the need.”

This year, the hospitals provided close to 1,300 pairs of shoes to students, which equals nearly 50 percent of the elementary pupils in the Flint Community School system. Hospital employees handed out the new shoes to students December 13-17 as is the tradition, so they get them right before their Christmas break. — G.G.
