SWARTZ CREEK — Alexis Carmody is the recipient of the 2020 GFWC Swartz Creek Women’s Club scholarship.

Club members presented Carmody with a $700 check on Thursday, Sept. 3, at an outdoor meeting at Abrams Park.

Carmody is a resident of Gaines Township and a 2017 graduate of Swartz Creek Community Schools. She currently attends Mott Community College where she is studying nursing.

Following graduation from Mott, she plans to attend the University of Michigan – Flint to pursue a bachelor of science degree in nursing, then continue her education and ultimately earn a doctorate in the field of anesthesiology.

Carmody said science has always interested her, and chemistry has always been one of her strongest classes.

“I am super thankful to the Women’s Club,” she said. “With the cost of supplies and tuition, this is very helpful.”

Carmody said she recently lost her job when the store where she was working closed, and was concerned about being able to buy books this semester.

Elaine Tucker, who chairs the GFWC’s Scholarship Committee, said the club was impressed with Carmody’s hard work.

Committee member Margie Stanuszek said Carmody is “an outstanding young lady.”
