FLUSHING — Girls on the Run, a physical activity based development program for girls in third to fifth grades, received recognition from the Flushing School Board at its Oct. 2 meeting. The non-profit program, which is organized by several Central Elementary School teachers, imparts life skills and encourages positive interaction through running games and a variety of fun activities around Flushing. Girls on the Run meets twice a week during the early spring months, with activities culminating in a running event held in May. Last season, the group ran in a 5K event hosted by Holt High School in Holt, MI. The Central Elementary chapter had 17 girls participate in the program last year and are expecting a great turnout this year. — B.G.
