— The Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) announces that the enrollment period for children has begun for free and reduced-priced meals under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast program.
If families believe they qualify, they should contact their local school district food service director or principal immediately. Each school district in Genesee County will have eligibility and application guidelines available to assist families in the application process. Families may apply for meal benefits at any time during the school year.
Guidelines for eligibility are established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The information provided by all families is confidential and will be used only for the purpose of determining program eligibility, data verification or qualifying children for other federal and state programs as authorized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. If children are approved for free and reduced price breakfast and lunch benefits, the family must report to the school any increases in income or decreases in the number of family members at home.
All families in Genesee County who believe they are eligible are encouraged to submit a full family application. By doing so, families with children of varying ages can establish eligibility for each child at one time. The free and reduced breakfast and lunch program is an excellent opportunity to ensure all children have access to nutritious meals during the school day.
In the current economic conditions, many families have been impacted and experience significant challenges in balancing the family budget. The free and reduced breakfast and lunch program helps families make the most of their resources by helping bridge the financial gap, and make school meals affordable. For more information, individuals should contact their local school principal or food service director. — Natalie Blythe
