FLINT TWP. — The Carman- Ainsworth girls’ golf team enters its 2017 campaign in somewhat of a rebuilding year. First-year varsity golf coach, but coach of the junior varsity team for 14 years, Matt Young, has to deal with the loss of two seniors to graduation while bringing back just three golfers that played last season, but never on the varsity level.
Sophomores Kennedy Mitchell and Michaela Hitchcock and junior Jamie Arnold all return to the course for Carman-Ainsworth this season, playing in their first varsity matches ever. Juniors Alana Milow and Payton Dixon and senior Malaysha Cooper join the squad for their first year of playing consistent golf.
“It’s going to be an interesting year, but we are going to have fun and try to improve individually,” said Young. “All of them are new to varsity and half of them are new, really, to playing much golf.”
With such a young and inexperienced squad, Young noted that they are focused on improving every day both individually and as a team.
Carman-Ainsworth competed yesterday at a Pre-Valley tournament in Frankenmuth at the Fortress following press deadlines and will be in action again on Tuesday at Lapeer.
