GOODRICH — Since she began competitive weightlifting several years ago, Goodrich native and local barber Traci Beaune has been a force to be reckoned with on the national scene.

Now, Beaune can add the title of world champion to her resume.

In late May, Beaune captured a 2021 World Masters Weightlifting Championship in the 35-39 female age group/64-kilogram weight class. The competition was held virtually by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Masters, which is the Olympic sport of weightlifting for persons 35-years-old or older.

The meet was originally supposed to be held in Kansai, Japan, but had to be completed virtually from May 24-29 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Beaune took part in the competition on May 28 at Liberatum Strength and Conditioning in Holly, where she was surrounded by her teammates and coaches.

Beaune said that she’s still trying to process the magnitude of winning an IWF Masters World title.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” she said. “Just being invited to compete for the USA in general was a huge accomplishment for me but winning was next level.”

Beaune won her world title in the snatch and clean-and-jerk lifting disciplines. A “snatch” is completed when a competitor lifts the barbell from the ground to an overhead position in one continuous motion. Clean-and-jerk is a two-part lift in which a competitor jerks the barbell to shoulder length, then raises the weight overhead.

Prior to weightlifting, Beaune competed at the national level in gymnastics while in high school. Around seven years ago, she started participating in CrossFit workouts and fell in love with the weightlifting aspect of her training.

With guidance from her coach Randy Lewis, Beaune dedicated herself to weightlifting competitions and soon began competing at the IWF Masters level in the United States. She has traveled across the country to compete in weightlifting events from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City to Savannah, Ga.

Beaune’s past USA Masters titles in the 35-39 female/64kg weight class category include the USA Masters National Championship 2020/2021, the Pan American Masters Championship 2020 and the Howard Cohen American Masters Championship 2020. All her championships were in the snatch/clean-and-jerk disciplines.

Beaune is also the current record holder in the snatch USA Masters 35-39 female/64kg weight class.
