GENESEE COUNTY — Goodwill Industries of Mid-Michigan has received notification from the United States Department of Labor that we have been awarded a one year grant in the amount of $200,000 to provide employment and training services, including job training, counseling and placement for homeless veterans.
Goodwill has several partners to help complete the grant requirements, including Our Home Transitional and Metro Community Development, as well as support from Genesee Health Systems (formerly Genesee County Community Mental Health). The grant will run through September 2014.
While all veterans are eligible for services from Goodwill Industries of Mid- Michigan, this grant was created especially to meet the needs of 50 veterans (at least 10 of whom are female), who are homeless, including their families and who live in Genesee County, including the City of Flint.
Goodwill will incorporate its job readiness, literacy, skills training and follow up programs and provide appropriate accommodations for homeless veterans in order to provide stability and workforce reintegration.
Goodwill Industries of Mid-Michigan has long been active in veterans’ programs, including as a charter member and current Board member of Joining Forces Michigan. In addition, Goodwill hosts the multi-state office of VetBizCentral, a non-profit which provides assistance for veteran entrepreneurs, at the 501 office suite within the Averill location. — G.G.
