FLUSHING — Flushing High School seniors received an unofficial commencement celebration at the Riverview Park Bandshell, just a few days before their graduation ceremony at Flushing High School.
The rousing sendoff, which was held on June 9, included a “graduation walk” across the bandshell stage, live music with a DJ and a traditional tassel turn and cap toss. Each graduating senior in attendance also received a flower and a facemask as a token of the community’s support.
The event was planned and paid for by Flushing residents Bob Hornacek and Toni Randall, who wanted to give the FHS Class of 2020 something special as they ended their high school tenure. Flowers were paid for by local REMAX agent Kari Hartley through her business.
Following the Riverview Park celebration, Flushing High School held its official graduation commencement for seniors in the high school auditorium on June 11. To promote social distancing, the district had students sign up for timeslots to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. — B.G.
