Grand Blanc View wins 2nd place in general excellence

Gould wins second for local columns

GENESEE COUNTY — The Grand Blanc View staff has been awarded the second place in General Excellence Award by the Michigan Press Association (MPA) for a newspaper of our circulation class.

Managing Editor Gary Gould also received a second place award for his column in the Davison Index. The Grand Blanc View also earned a second place award for design.

View Newspapers, publishers of The County Press, the Lapeer Area View, the Davison Index and the Genesee County Views are proud to announce the company won a total of 49 awards (up from 43 in 2012), ranging from column writing, editorial writing, photography to sports and advertising design honors.

The County Press in Lapeer received a nod for first place in General Excellence in weekly newspapers Class C.

Judges commented of The County Press General Excellence Award, “Good use of all front page space. One of the most well-designed publications not only in Class C, but in the entire state. While reading one particular issue, I almost forgot that I was reading a local paper. National and state issues with the local touch put this paper a notch above the rest.”

Publisher Wes Smith commented of the MPA awards, “I’m very proud of our View Newspaper Group team for their continued commitment to excellence in serving our readers and advertisers. Recognition from our peers in the newspaper business underscores that service and, I think, reminds us to keep raising the bar for ourselves.”

In recognition of the dozens of professionals that touched the development of The County Press pages, the newspaper won first place for General Excellence — a reflection of the total package from news and sports writing to layout and design, typography, news and sports photography, ad design to column writing to special advertising sections. It was a critical page-by-page review of the newspaper, including the quality of our color reproduction on the printed page, as judged by our peers in the Nebraska Press Association.

The Nebraska editors, reporters and page design experts reviewed 3,108 entries submitted by 114 Michigan newspapers when they judged the 2013 MPA Better Newspaper Contest last summer.

Release of the MPA awards coincide with National Newspaper Week, Oct. 6- 12, an industry observance of newspapers and our importance to democracy and the dissemination of information to enrich and enhance the quality of life in our communities.

“One thing that’s remained constant in our media transformation is the need to meet audience demands through local news coverage,” said MPA Executive Director Mike MacLaren. “With this year’s MPA Better Newspaper Contest showing an 11 percent increase over last year, we’re excited to see stronger competition for community content excellence because that is a key performance indicator in capturing audience attention and building better communities.”
