Great game, poor pick

Fat Guy Corner

The Super Bowl 50 winner is the Denver Broncos! Yes, the old man, Peyton Manning, beat the favored Carolina Panthers 24-10.

I predicted a Carolina victory, which was wrong. However, I did like the Broncos to cover the spread and they more than covered the spread; they won outright! Yes, the Fat Guy will put that cash right directly into his pocket. I will say the 2-point conversion cost me some square money and I was a tad bit upset about that! I have no luck when it comes to winning squares I should just quit buying them, to be truthful.

The defenses were the story of the game. Carolina was 3-of-15 on third-down conversions and Denver was the worst at 1-of-14 on third downs. How many Super Bowl winners do you think have won converting only one first down?

Denver’s defense was lights out and so was the Panthers. Carolina’s Cam “the sore loser” Newton was under constant pressure all game long. Cam only completed 18-of-41 passes and was sacked six times. Manning was sacked five times.

Peyton only completed 12-of-23 for 141 yards. I thought the play of Emmanuel Sanders with six catches for 83 yards and C. J. Anderson rushing 23 times for 90 yards was huge for the Denver offense. Let’s be honest, Carolina turned it over four times and committed double-digit penalties. Those two statistics will lead you to defeat in any football game.

The Super Bowl MVP, Von Miller, was awesome and earned the MVP award by “dabbing” all over Cam “The Scam” Newton. I will say, those of you who say it was a boring football game just don’t appreciate good defensive football. I loved this Super Bowl because of the defense played in this game. I love defensive football! Those 45-42 games are garbage football! The old statement of defense wins championships seems to always ring true! The No. 1 defense is now a sterling 10-2 in Super Bowls. The next time the No. 1 defense makes the Super Bowl, they will more than likely win it! Remember that, football fans.

The next lingering question is, was that Peyton Manning’s last football game in the NFL? I really hope Peyton rides off into the sunset as a Super Bowl winner! Peyton, you have been a class act and you have nothing left to prove in this league! Denver, celebrate your World Championship! We won’t know for a while if Peyton is saying good bye. He said he’s going to take his time and not make an “emotional” decision on this one.

Switching focus to round ball

The football season is over and now it’s time to focus on the college and NBA basketball seasons, the NHL and spring training is super close to starting up in Lakeland, Florida.

The Detroit Pistons are fighting for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and are currently sitting in the final playoff spot with a 27-26 record. I have enjoyed watching the Pistons so far this season.

Winged Wheels on a mission

The Detroit Red Wings are battling in the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference for playoff contention. The Red Wings’ fight will go down to the wire as there are many teams within a few points of each other. It will be a fun ride in late March and early April.

Sparty back on track

The Michigan State Spartans are back on track after a little losing streak. MSU absolutely railroaded the Michigan Wolverines at Crisler Arena last Saturday afternoon winning the contest 89-73. If this was supposed to be a close game, it sure wasn’t! Bryn Forbes hit for eight 3-pointers and Denzel Valentine had 21 points, nine boards and eight assists in the rout. Forbes is just on fire hitting 10-of-13 field goals. Does coach Izzo have a future Final Four team on his hands once again? It’s really starting to look like it to me. MSU has moved back up to No. 10 in the rankings.

Great signing

It was nice to see the Tigers sign J.D. Martinez to a two-year deal. The Tigers need him in the lineup, plus the name J.D. is awesome! thefatguy@mihomepaper.com
