DAVISON — The recently formed Committee For School Board Integrity must obtain the necessary 3,689 signatures on recall petitions to hold an election to remove Davison Board of Education member Matthew Smith from office.
The recall language was approved on Oct. 4 and there are 180 days to collect signatures. However, each signature is only valid for 60 days, so once collection begins the clock begins running.
By statute, the earliest the recall question can be put before voters is the May 2022 election.
According to the group, the campaign has set a goal to collect 6,000 signatures, more than the 3,689 that is required, and they hope to begin collecting by Dec. 1.
Resident Jenessa Phillips has led the effort to have recall language approved. She started the recall effort after Smith was charged with making an alleged threatening phone call to a public official in Houghton County. — G.G.
