SWARTZ CREEK — By now, those empty beverage bottles and cans must be piling up in basements and garages all around the community.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in March issued executive orders that rendered returnable containers temporarily unreturnable.
For area residents who don’t care about getting their dimes back, and who want to help out a couple of local organizations, there’s a solution for reducing the stockpile: donations.
The Gaines Township Fire Department and American Legion Post 294 are accepting donations of empty pop bottles and cans.
The fire department has a container set up at Station #1, 9241 W. Grand Blanc Road. Proceeds will go toward the purchase of personal protective equipment for firefighters.
Donors who are unable to deliver their empties to the station may call the township hall at 810-635-3200 or 989-271-6300 to arrange for a firefighter to collect them. Please leave a name, address and phone number.
To assist the American Legion, drop off empty bottles and cans inside the pavilion next to the pole barn at the post, 3440 Morrish Road.
In addition, financial donations may be made to American Legion Post #294, PO Box 66, Swartz Creek, MI 48473. — L.R.
