Heisman talk in Ann Arbor?

Fat Guy Corner

The Michigan Wolverines opened up a can of whoop (you know what) on the Rutgers football team last Saturday night. The Wolverines defeated Rutgers 78-0 and held them to 22 yards of offense and two first downs. The question one must ask, is Jabrill Peppers deserving of Heisman Trophy consideration? Jabrill has played 12 different positions for the Wolverines so far this season. If you asked Coach Jim Harbaugh he would say “If there is a better football player in college football other than Peppers I don’t who it is!” Those choice words are high praise, also a tad bit biased, but he just might have a valid point. I really believe he deserves to be in the discussion from here until the end of the season. If Peppers has a large game against the Buckeyes of Ohio State things will be very interesting for him going forward.

I also want to note that the Rutgers football team is one sorry bunch of Division 1 football players. The program at Rutgers is in dire straits and that is being polite.

More dire straits

The Michigan State Spartans lost at home to the BYU Cougars 31-14 last Saturday. The loss was the Spartans’ third straight loss, which is the first time for that since 2009. The Cougars dominated the Spartans offensively running 78 plays to the Spartans 53. The Spartans, who have Michigan and Ohio State on the schedule, still could be in danger of missing a bowl game! Who would have predicted that? Not me, that’s for sure. The Spartans will take on Northwestern this Saturday in their Homecoming game.

Bringing out the brooms

How about the American League baseball playoffs? The Cleveland Indians sweep the Boston Red Sox. The Toronto Blue Jays sweep the Texas Rangers. I can honestly say to see two sweeps is almost unheard of. I thought the Indians would win the series but to win in three straight games was quite impressive. The Toronto Blue Jays are swinging really good bats and could be the team to win it all. However, in this series, the Cleveland Indians’ pitching is head and shoulders above the Texas Rangers’ starting pitching staff. I think this will be one heck of a baseball series to watch.

The Fat Guy is rooting for the Cleveland Indians to go to the World Series with his heart. However, his mind says it will be the Toronto Blue Jays who advance and win the American League pennant. I just want to see some good baseball.

I did enjoy watching the farewell tribute to Big Papi David Ortiz after the Red Sox were eliminated by Cleveland. What a career and great ambassador for the game of baseball! He killed the Tigers over the years but I was still a Big Papi fan! Enjoy your retirement, my man. You earned it.

The National League series are both still ongoing but I think it will be the Washington Nationals and the Cubbies playing for the National League pennant. I am standing by the Cubbies to advance to the World Series!

Saying goodbye to the Joe

It’s farewell time for Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Yes, it’s hard to believe that hockey season is upon us already. It’s also the Wings’ final season at the Joe. The Red Wings open up on the road Thursday night with the Tampa Bay hockey club. The Ottawa Senators will be the opponent for Detroit in its last season at the Joe. Detroit will not have Pavel Datsyuk and it will seem strange not seeing No. 13 on the ice in the Winged Wheel uniform. The veteran defensemen, Niklas Kronwell, will open up on the DL for the Wings. Coach Jeff Blashill looks to improve on the penalty kill and power play, which Detroit struggled with finishing in the middle of the pack last season. The Red Wings’ power play was a tough watch a season ago if you remember. The bottom line is, making the playoffs is nice keeping the streak alive but I want more! Go Wings!
