Help is on the way

FLINT TWP. — The township board has approved conditional offers of employment for seven on-call firefighters. Twelve applications resulted from the department’s aggressive efforts to beef up the roster, including a mass mailing of 12,000 notices, posters and street signs,

Seven of those applicants were accepted including one with experience, said Assistant Fire Chief Mike Burkley.

Joshua Allison, who already has training, will start right away, Burkley said. The other seven candidates will be attending the Fire Training Academy. Some will enroll in training that began this week and others in the fall academy. They are Kyle Carpenter,

Shane Doty, Stevie Gawne, Rene Hanna, Samuel Kelly and Charles Randolph.

Some candidates also still have to complete medical testing.

Burkley said the department’s on-call roster is below acceptable levels. Recruitment is not just a township problem, it is county, state and national, he said. If all seven new recruits pass muster, it will boost on-call staffing up to about 26, Burkley said, adding that at least 40 are needed. At one time, the department had a roster of 60 on-call firefighters and all were used, he said.
