SWARTZ CREEK — The Swartz Creek Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting ceremony for a business new to Swartz Creek, Higher Grounds Coffee and Smoothie shop.
The store has been in operation for approximately a month and a half, per owners Danielle and Lanny Buckner, and celebrated the shop’s Grand Opening on May 22.
It is the only coffee shop in Swartz Creek and also boasts a full menu of breakfast, Panini style sandwiches and baked goods.
Located at 8048 Miller Rd., it is in the rear of the complex which houses Swartz Creek Computer repair.
Danielle Buckner said owning their own business is something the couple has talked about for some time, and something her husband Lanny has wanted to do all his life.
Additionally, they saw the business as an opportunity to provide employment for the two youngest of their eight children in a touch job market.
Danielle Buckner said her husband and father-in-law completely remodeled and decorated the space and she is especially please with the “kids corner” which features a chalkboard wall and other kid friendly items.
“I wanted to make sure there was a place for kids so (both they and the parent) could enjoy themselves,” she said. “There is also a kids meal menu available at the restaurant.”
The Buckners also said they currently have two organizations that hold a monthly meeting there and they are open to other groups who may wish to use it for that purpose.”
In addition to the traditional menu of coffee drinks, there are also salad and smoothies available for the more health conscious consumers. The building features a cozy living room like area as well as café style tables and an outdoor patio, all of which are handicapped accessible.
Their regular hours are 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, 7:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursdays, 7:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, closed on Sundays, and subject to change for special events.
