Holly wins tennis regional



HOLLY – Host Holly won the Div. 2 boys’ tennis regional title last Friday at the split Holly/Fenton sites. Holly had 16 points and Fenton moved on with 10 as the second-place team. Teams had to win, place second or earn 18 points to qualify for the state meet. The winner and runner-up at No.1 Singles earn automatic berths.

Flushing was third with nine points, Bay City Central fourth with eight, Swartz Creek fifth with six and Alpena sixth with five. Brandon was seventh with two and Kearsley eighth with zero.

At No. 1 Singles, Flushing’s Josh Stemczysnki lost to Alpena 6-2, 6-1, Creek’s Brandon Soth lost to Holly 6-2, 6-3 and Kearsley’s Jack Vollmar was shut out by Fenton 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 2, Flushing’s Andrew Kearney beat Kearsley’s Meteo Booth 6-0, 6-0, then lost to Swartz Creek’s Joey Montini 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. Montini then lost to Bay City Central 6-2, 6-4.

At No. 3, Flushing’s Keaten Franklin beat Fenton’s Connor Griffin 7-5, 6-4, then lost to Alpena 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Swartz Creek’s Jacob Pitcher lost to Alpena 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-2 and Kearsley’s Jacobi Wright lost to Bay City Central 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 4, Flushing’s Jacob Besko beat Fenton 6-1, 6-1, then took out Bay City Central 6-0, 6-2 then knocked out Holly 6-3, 6-2 to be named regional champ. He was also the top seed at that flight. Creek’s Hunter Moore lost to Holly 6-1, 6-1 and Kearsley’s Adam Sefa lost against Bay City Central 6-1, 6-3.

At No. 1 Doubles Flushing’s Austin Shepp/ Zack Mills beat Alpena 6-4, 7-6(1) before falling to Fenton 6-4, 6-3. Creek’s Nolan Moore/ Lewis Benjamin lost to Fenton 7-5, 6-4 and Kearsley’s Dante Schwartz/Jacob Jackson lost to Holly 6-1, 6-0.

At No. 2, Flushing’s Scott Branham/Grant Young beat Bay City Central 6-4, 6-2 then lost to Holly 6-2, 6-1. Creek’s John Hill/Drew Yaklin beat Brandon 6-1, 6-3 then lost to Fenton 6-1, 6-3. Kearsley’s Mike and Marshall Judd were shut out by Holly 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 3, Flushing’s Jared Bissonnette/Chase Ward beat Brandon 6-0, 6-1 before falling to Holly 6-1, 6-2. Creek’s Brandon Gibson/Nick Rigdon beat Bay City Central 2-6, 6-4, 6-0, then beat Fenton 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 before losing to Holly in the championship match 6-3, 6-3. Kearsley’s Philip Stites/Wyatt Howard were shut out by Fenton 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 4, Flushing’s Jack Killingbeck/Jacob Barclay beat Brandon 6-1, 6-2 before losing to Fenton 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(5). Creek’s Alex McInnis/ Ethan Irish beat Kearsley’s Dalton Roberts/ Chris Moyer 6-1, 6-2, before losing to Holly 6-0, 6-0. — L.P.
