Hospitals implement visitor restrictions during pandemic

GENESEE COUNTY — Officials from the Genesee County Health Department, Ascension Genesys, Hurley Medical Center and McLarenFlint are in regular contact with each other, as well as with state and federal agencies, to coordinate preparedness efforts for COVID-19 in Genesee County.

All three health systems continue to implement visitor restrictions and encourage community members to stay home when they are sick and wait until they are well to visit anyone that is in the hospital.

These healthcare organizations stress the importance of staying home when you are sick and washing your hands often as the most effective ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19, influenza and other communicable diseases in our community.

They also encourage individuals to clean frequently touched surfaces often with a sanitizing wipe or household cleanser and avoid close contact with people who are sick. Everyone is advised to avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth, and stay home from work, school, or social gatherings when they are sick.

Here are the restrictions in place at each of the three health institutions:

• Hurley Medical Center

Routine visitation is suspended until the Center for Disease Control determines the transmission of COVID-19 is no longer a threat.

Visitation is restricted to 7 a.m.-9 p.m.

Adult hospital and emergency room patients: one adult visitor per patient (not including OB patients in our labor and delivery area). Childbirth patients in OB area: two adult visitors for mothers in labor and delivery. No siblings of the newborn. Pediatric and newborn hospital and emergency room patients: two adult primary caregivers per patient. No siblings or extended family.

Outpatient clinics: Adult patients: one visitor who is providing transportation to the patient receiving care. Pediatric patients: two adult primary caregivers.

No visitation for COVID-19 confirmed cases, or patients under investigation for COVID-19. No children under the age of 16 will be allowed to visit, except under exceptional circumstances.

• McLaren Flint

Restricted visitation is allowed. Effective immediately, all McLaren Health Care hospitals will limit inpatient visitation. Each patient may have one healthy adult visitor to assist with the plan of care, personal care, discharge preparation, or communication.

Social visitation should be via telephone or Facetime.

Patients with scheduled outpatient procedures may bring one healthy adult visitor with them.

• Ascension Genesys

Ascension is implementing temporary visitor restrictions, in both inpatient and outpatient settings, to minimize disease transmission, specifically the spread of viral respiratory infections including COVID-19.

The current visitation policy at Ascension Genesys Hospital includes the following:

Restricting visitors who have flu-like symptoms and/or cough, fever, and/or shortness of breath, runny nose/nasal congestion, or sore throat.

Limiting visits to two visitors per patient at any given time.

Visits from children under age 14 will be at the discretion of patients and clinicians involved in their care.

Per guidance from the CDC, we are restricting visitors who have returned from a country within the past 14 days that the CDC has designated as Level 3 Warning or Level 2 for Novel Coronavirus.
