FLINT — Hurley Medical Center has introduced new robotic technology that will assist its surgeons and medical staff with total knee replacement procedures.
On June 19, Hurley hosted a demonstration of Zimmer Biomet’s ROSA Knee System. ROSA, an acronym for Robotic Surgical Assistant, enables surgeons to fine-tune the placement of knee implants and gather real-time data for more precise results.
Dr. Paul Telehowski, a surgeon with Ortho Michigan, participated in the on-site training along with personnel from Zimmer Biomet. The surgical team operated on a cadaver to illustrate how ROSA’s cutting-edge software technology assists with bone incisions, assessments of soft tissue and the positioning of knee implants during surgery.
“It’s a tool that lets us measure things and gives us feedback in the operating room,” Telehowski said. “With this technology, we can take knee replacement to the next level and achieve even higher levels of satisfaction with our patients.”
The ROSA Knee System robot is comprised of two main components: an upright stand with an interactive touchscreen monitor and a surgical module that’s equipped with a robotic arm. Surgeons use the first component to display and access data before and during surgery and utilize the second component to guide the placing of implants for greater precision and flexibility.
During a procedure, ROSA informs surgeons of the many details related to a patient’s specific anatomy and how it may affect an implant fit. This process includes mapping natural leg movements and indicating where incisions should be made.
Telehowski said that ROSA’s technological assistance ensures that knee implants fit better, while also allowing for faster recovery times and giving patients the opportunity to be active soon after undergoing surgery.
“Gone are the days where patients would have to stay a week in the hospital and rehab,” he said. “We’re able to get (implants) in people and get them up and moving and back home. A month or two months down the road, they’re back to doing what they want to do.”
