Hurley Medical Center re-elects board officers

FLINT — At their annual meeting on July 25, the Hurley Board of Managers re-elected the following slate of officers for a second year: Charlotte Edwards, Chair; Philip Shaltz, Vice- Chair; Carl Bekofske, Treasurer; and Frances Gilcreast, Secretary.

Charlotte Edwards has been a member of the Hurley Board of Managers since 2002. She is Vice President & Community Development Officer with Citizens Bank in Flint. Ms. Edwards holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a Master of Arts degree from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant. Ms. Edwards did complete the Michigan Hospital Association’s 2010 Excellence in Governance Fellowship and in April of this year received the Community Spirit Award from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis for her outstanding dedication to affordable housing and community economic development.

Phil Shaltz has been a member of the Hurley Board of Managers since 2008. He is the President of Shaltz Automation as well as President- Founder of several organizations, including: Shaltz Automation, Grady Ventures, Carson Development, Commerce Connect, LLC and Uptown Six, LLC. Mr. Shaltz also is a member of the Hurley Foundation Board. He received a BS Degree in Packaging from Michigan State University in 1970, and is involved in a number of community activities, including serving on several Boards.

Carl Bekofske has been a member of the Hurley Board of Managers since 2008. He is an attorney in private practice in Flint and since 1986 has served as a Genesee County Public Administrator, administering estates for decedents and unknown heirs. Since 1985 he has served as a Chapter Thirteen Trustee in Flint, an appointment by the Office of U.S. Trustee, Department of Justice for Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston and Shiawassee Counties. He was an adjunct professor for Cooley Law School in Lansing and at Mott Community College. Mr. Bekofske received his Juris Doctorate from Wayne State University in 1967. He did serve as a Flint City Council member from 1975-1979. Mr. Bekofske has served on numerous community Boards.

Frances Gilcreast has been member of the Hurley Board of Managers since 2005. She currently serves as the President of the NAACP, Flint Chapter, and was named the 2007 NAACP President of the Year for the State of Michigan. Frances graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Social Work. Ms. Gilcreast has received a number of awards and honors, including the Donald J. Riegle Community Service Award by the Flint Jewish Federation and the Flint Pan-Hellenic Council’s Community Service Awards. Ms. Gilcreast is a member of the Gamma Delta Chapter Hall of Living Legends and the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. — G.G.
