FLINT— Hurley Medical Center Auxiliary members will celebrate the organization’s 56th birthday at a luncheon at Bethel United Methodist Church, 1309 North Ballenger Highway, beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 19.
A check for $75,000 will be given to Melany Gavulic, Hurley President and Chief Executive Officer, representing the Auxiliary’s last payment toward a $500,000 pledge for the Emergency Department Renovation Project. The money was raised from sales in the Medical Center gift shop and patient hospitality cart and by other fundraising events and activities. Auxiliary members will receive service pins for total hours worked since joining the Auxiliary.
During 2012, the group’s 159 members donated a total of 40,000 hours of volunteer work in 19 separate services.
Nancy McWhirter has performed over 24,000 hours of service as an Auxiliary member since 1974. Sixteen other members have volunteered more than 10,000 hours of service each including: Lois Johnson, Gerri McCormick, Everett Skeel, Eileen Geiger, Barbara Arndt, Barbara Tankersley, Richard Foor, Eleanor Poole, Noreen Renwick, Ruth Spoomer, Janice Spinney, Evelyn Ward, Florence Christensen, Lurenzia Wheatley, Evelyn Ward, and Lois Cunningham. Auxiliary volunteers donating over 1,000 hours of service in 2013 include: Josephine Haney, Tani Konzer, Marliyn Lewinski, Sheila Minarik, Nancy Viehle.
Since 1956, the Auxiliary has donated over $3.8 million to the medical center for needed programs and equipment. Along with the Coordinator of Pastoral Care, On-Call Chaplains ensure 24/7 spiritual support for Hurley’s patients, family and staff. — Rhonda Sanders
