FLINT — The First Annual Exporter of the Year Awards will take place Feb. 7. The event is presented by the I-69 International Trade Corridor economic development partners to honor exporters in the region.
The event takes place at the Lapeer Country Club from 5:30-7 p.m. An Exporter of the Year award will be presented to one company in Shiawassee, Genesee, Lapeer and St. Clair counties.
Richard Corson, Director of the U.S. Department of Commerce and Deanna Richeson, Director of Export Strategy for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation will present during the event.
The program will also feature presentations from Corridor economic development partners from the Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership, the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Lapeer Development Corporation and the Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County.
According to Janice Karcher, Vice President of Economic Development for the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce exporting is a significant component of economic growth for the region because it provides an opportunity for businesses in the area to grow and diversify.
“Exporting is important to the growth of businesses in the region,” said Karcher. “The Corridor partners are working to connect local businesses with export opportunities and support. The Exporter of the Year Awards will highlight businesses currently engaged in exporting. Our goal is to help businesses participate in the global economy.”
Through partnerships and collaborations with the U.S. Department of Commerce, the State of Michigan and Michigan State University the Corridor partners are providing access to funding and support for businesses in the region with an interest in exporting. Each award nominee is an exporter located in one of the Corridor’s counties.
