The college football season kicked off last Saturday with a couple of football games that didn’t have much meaning to most fans.
The Big Ten will actually have a league game on Thursday night with Northwestern traveling to Purdue to take on the improved Boilermakers. I think this will be a decent football game.
I am so against league games as your opening week of football. Why they scheduled it that way is beyond me. However, the game will count in the standings.
Is it possible that Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald has been the coach at Northwestern for 13 years already? Man, I can’t believe it. I will watch this game on Thursday night for sure. The P.J. Fleck-coached Minnesota Golden Gophers also kick off on Thursday in a non-league affair against New Mexico State. New Mexico State was beaten pretty good by Wyoming last Saturday. Can P. J. Fleck repeat the magic at Minnesota that he did at Western Michigan in turning the football program around? P. J. Fleck went 5-7 in his first year at Minnesota and I see a 6-6 season this year.
The Michigan State Spartans open at home with high expectations in East Lansing. Sparty will be at home against the Utah State Aggies on Friday night. These two football teams have never played one another on the gridiron. The Spartans have won 19 straight home openers and they will win this football game to make it 20 straight.
This Spartan team returns 19 starting football players with 10 on offense and nine on defense. Michigan State should contend for a third Big Ten Title game in six years. The Spartans catch a break not having to face Wisconsin and get both Michigan and Ohio State at home. The 10-3 record from last season has the potential to be even better with a little football luck. I could see the Spartans at 11-2 realistically. Let the Sparty party begin Friday night! I see a low-scoring game in East Lansing! The Cheeseball says: Spartans 23 and Utah State 13.
The Michigan Wolverines are coming off an awful 8-5 season last year. The pressure on Jim Harbaugh the “Savior” to many Michigan fans is immense here in 2018. The quarterback position job was won by Shea Patterson and Michigan fans are happy to finally have a legit quarterback. The Wolverines’ schedule is brutal with Notre Dame, Michigan State and Ohio State all on the road and Wisconsin at home. I say wowzer to that schedule.
The opener will be a night game at Notre Dame and it should be a dandy of a game! The winner will feel really good about their football team and get the 2018 season off and running. A loss, however, is not the end of the world because it’s so early in the season.
The Wolverines, to get into the Big Ten championship game, will need some luck. I see a 10-3 or 9-4 season for the Wolverines. The cheeseball prediction: Maize and Blue 23 and Golden Domers 20. The college football season has arrived and I am one happy college football fan.
Shall I say it? Same Old Lions!
The Detroit Lions regular season tune-up, which is game three of the preseason, was a total debacle. I don’t give a rats tail that their third stringers defeated the Tampa Bay third stringers. The offense for the Lions was horrible and a disgusting watch! The Tampa Bay Buccaneers ran the ball down the Lions throats like ice cream sliding down my throat! The pencil-behind-the-head coaches’ ear must have been a No. 2 pencil, as the performance on the field was a No. 2 effort. The eyeball test by the Fat Guy says it will be a long season in Motown!
Matt Patricia can take his pencil out and pencil in about five wins! I know many of you think I am probably overreacting and maybe I am, but I am so tired of watching the Lions stumble around in futility year after year! Okay, my first, and not my last, Lions rant is over and I will calm down until the home opener is over against the Jets!
Can you beat me?
